“After my travel in the service, the Journal seemed dull. My brother was with Life so I took over his studio and started free lancing. I thought I wanted studio work but every ex-GI who’d gone to photographic school had opened a studio, too. There were a gillion photographers, all going broke—including myself.”
Opportunity
Looking for work, Joe made a call to Life’s Chicago bureau manager to check on free lance possibilities. It was the right thing to do at the right time. A regular staffer had been hurt in an accident and the bureau needed a photographer— quick. “He liked what I did. I closed my studio and started free lancing for Life and six or seven months later, he offered me a staff job.”
