THE TOP STORY in the March
9, 1950 edition of the Rappahannock News was the quick arrest and recovery made by State Trooper William A. Buntin in the theft of a pickup belonging to James W. Fletcher. Buntin found the truck in Washington at five in the morning. The truck had been taken only minutes before from the Virginia and Buck Lewis residence where the household was aroused by the sound of the vehicle starting up.
After notifying Buntin, Lewis and a neighbor set off in pursuit of the Fletcher pick-up. The driver who was allegedly armed with both a pistol and a rifle was quickly apprehended and arrested. He was also a suspect in the theft and wreck of a truck owned by H.B. Wood during the same night.
Notice was given of a proposed increase in the local tax levy. An additional 15* on each $100 of assessed valuation of taxable property would go for the county’s 1950 general reassessment. This would bring total local taxes to $2 per $100 in each district except Piedmont where it was 15* more due to road taxes.
