Eight hopefuls contended for the five seats on the town council. William E. Wickens, a lawyer with offices in Washington, D. C. who has been a resident of the town for only two years, was the top vote getter with 69. Incumbent Dorothy Clater, who currently serves as town secretary, was second with 65.
Leaving his mayor’s gavel at the head of the table for a council seat, Miller had 64 votes. Evelyn Miller Willis, daughter of the late Arthur and Emily Miller and a native of Washington, tallied 60.
