takes to implement index pay...It’s something that I think should be done. I just want to clarify that.”

At the request of the board, Cox determined that a one percent cut across the board in proposed pay — dropping administration to 5.5 percent raises and the rest of the school staff, including teachers, to 6.5 percent total — would reduce the proposed school budget by about $18,000.

Lane pointed out that with the index scale and the one percent reduction in what was proposed, Rappahannock’s stvting salary would rank 81st instead of 90th and its maximum teacher pay 74th instead of 117th among the state’s 135 school divisions (assuming the rest of the salaries in the state are unchanged).

With the 6.5 percent bottom line increase, raises individual teachers get will range from four percent to nine percent, according to Estabrook. The smallest dollar raise will be $24, he reported, adding, however, that the individual will receive a much larger increase on next year’s step in the index scale. The next smallest dollar increase will be $462. Teachers for five years’ experience will get $923, with six years’ $1,100. The largest dollar increase — $1,582 — will go to a 24 year veteran.
