Fife discussed a variety of issues during his two-anda-half hour stop, among them: school prayer, abortion, the Equal Rights Amendment, defense spending, Medicare, the Clean Air Act, and foreign policy. Fife said he had been raised on a farm, and expressed particular interest in the views of Rappahannockers. “I need to get out to find out what farmers in this area want. The situation has changed so much,” Fife said. Fife wants to rid owners of small farms of tax burdens that encourage people to sell farmland to developers, he said.
A vice-president and trust officer of the Sovran Bank of Virginia, Fife announced that he will leave his post on May 15 to pursue the Democratic nomination full-time. His wife, Nancy, is a former mayor of Charlottesville.
