“So even at 6.5 percent, the county’s doing a good job,” Lane emphasized as the board agreed to reduce proposed pay raises by one percent for all school employees.

In addressing the $294,494 proposed allocation for maintenance of school plants, a 59 percent increase over the current year, Lane asked first if the superintendent expected any money to be left in the school budget in June when the fiscal year ends.
“If there is, I’ll have to be officially proclaimed a magician...It appears that it will be very, very tight,” said Estabrook. “If there is any surplus, it will be minimal,” he said, adding that the School Board has worked diligently to stay within funding limits set by the supervisors after last year’s budget cuts.
Estes asked if the maintenance category included ENOUGH for upkeep and repairs. “If you need more, you should have more.”
“We should maintain what we’ve got. It doesn’t make sense to let it go down,” agreed Supervisor Clarence Baldwin.
