Gospel Music
The Gay Street Theatre was alive with music and the spirit of celebration last Saturday night as groups from four local churches presented an exciting evening of gospel music.
Rev. Deane of Macedonia Baptist Church in Flint Hill led opening prayers and helped to create the sense of sharing between audience and singers that characterized the evening—everyone present felt free to sing along, clap hands and frilly participate in the vitality and energy of the music.
The Clarence E. Dearing Gospel Chorus of Washington First Baptist Church began the performances with spirited renditions, concluding their segment with an outstanding solo by Barbara Shanks, “I Shall Wear a Crown”, accompanied by Nanette Butler’s inspired piano playing.
The Singing Word of Amiss ville United Methodist Church provided a contrast of style, singing with gentle lyricism. Their performance was highlighted with a solo by Ralph Letts, “Give Ear to My Words.”.
Rev. Merle Schorb of the Rappahannock Methodist Churches provided quiet piano selections during intermission. The integration of the music with the voices « and laughter of the audience again carried out the evening’s theme of music bringing people together. The performances resumed with the Macedonia Price Singers, accompanied by the vivacious piano playing and singing of Mrs. Deane, wife of Macedonia’s minister. Their looser and more informal style won much of the audience over to singing along, particularly on their last song, “I’ve Got Somel
