ten. I felt like a boy again, standing at the top of the stairway, ready to straddle the banister for a free fall to the bottom. But it seemed grandma was guarding that banister just like she used to, teaching me early lessons about restraint.
We continued to wind along 707, driving past a Rappahannock family. The mother was hanging sheets to dry in the crisp mountain air. Everyone waved.
I tried to respond. My hand felt like a catcher’s mitt; my arm was numb and prickly, as though I’d slept on it too long. We whisked by before I got the chance.
