The Spenyville Rescue Squad, organized in 1969, might have had trouble helping anyone had it not been for the help of a Sperryville family who served for years as dispatchers.
Donald Gore, president of the rescue squad, praised Mrs. Ethel Clater, Mrs. Cteo Dodson, and Mr. Charles B. Dodson for their untiring dedication to the task of dispatching. This year, on February 1, dispatching for all county fire and rescue squads was turned over to the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department.
Actually Mrs. Clater, had served as Sperryville’s dispatcher for 37 years. It was a volunteer effort she and husband George, now deceased, took seriously. "We’d dispatch right from here,” Mrs. Clater said. "We’d receive a call, sound the alarm, and start calling whoever was on duty or whoever we could get.”
Cleo, Mrs. Clater’s daughter, was reared as a dispatcher. Until February, it was an effort she, husband Charles, and Mrs. Clater shared.
