The supervisors looked at two other areas in the budget with an eye towards possible cuts but in both cases held off after hearing from school representatives.
Lane acknowledged that Rappahannock lags behind neighboring counties in supplemental pay scale for extracurricular duties. “But I sort of feel like some of this goes with the territory,” he said, adding that he had personally targeted raises on that sale for reduction. However, when informed that increases per extra duty assignment “don’t come any where near 6.5 percent”, he dropped his suggestion for cuts there.
Likewise, Chairman Latham withdrew his proposal for eliminating purchase of one school bus in 1984-85 after hearing that six buses currently in the fleet are approaching or past 100,000 miles.
Going through the budget by categories, the board lowered bottom line totals below the School Board’s request only to reflect the one percent cut in proposed salary increases. Handshakes and smiles passed back and forth between the supervisors and school representatives at the close of the meeting.
