One Rappahannocker I met told of an informal survey he’d taken of communities where people wave and where they don’t. Of course, being from Rappahannock, he always waved, and found it a difficult habit to break when he ventured elsewhere. His conclusion: Outside of Rappahannock County, nobody waves first and only one in ten wave back.

Our car approached another pedestrian. I was ready, anxious to dust off the cobwebs and give it a try. The pedestrian waved; I waved back. It felt good.

And it feels good coming to Rappahannock County. It’s a feeling one gets when he’s on the way home after being away for far too long.
