At first, I didn’t know how to react. After ail, it had been a long time since I’d seen such behavior. So, for awhile, I just watched, not really reacting at all.

The people were waving. Every time our car passed someone, the person waved. I noticed it first in Washington. An elderly woman, seeing our approach, paused to wave. It didn’t seem to matter that she lost a step or two.

On the road to Slate Mills, if happened again. A farmer paused, leaned on his hoe, waved and tipped his hat. It didn’t seem to matter that he lost a stroke or two.

I wanted to respond — to wave — in the worst kind of way. It was an exciting feeling, one I’d almost forgot
