Last year, bills to patients from the dental clinic totaled $60,000 on Medicaid’s fee scale. ‘'That figure would have been at least $150,000 in the private sector,” Dr. Hughes noted. “Right now, we’re averaging $1,600 to $1,800 in charges per week on the Medicaid scale. The same services would cost $6,000 from a private dentist. That’s what the community is getting—a lot for a little.”
The savings are dual. Not only do Rappahannock residents receive dental care at reduced cost, the only local tax dollars spent on the program go for part of the dental assistant’s salary and expendable supplies, according to Hughes. The rest of the overhead is covered by the two state and federal agencies.
