L<ocai crews with the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation spent 1,364 hours at a cost of 14,713 to dean up litter from Rappahannock’s public roads in 1982-88. The figures break down to 1,348 hours and $4,624 on the county’s primary system and 16 hours and $189 on its secondary system.
In the 11 county Culpeper District, less was spent only in Greene ($2,027) and Fluvanna ($3,187). Prince William ranked at the top with $64,863 in litter clean-up expenditures, followed by Loudoun with $39,692, Fauquier with $29,078, Albemarle with $26,411 and Louisa with $27,631.
Litter costs for the state in 1982-83 amounted to almost $2.2 million for some 275.000 hours or 38,250 eight-hour days. Department workers spent the time picking up trash from along roadsides as well as from medians, rest areas and waysids. About 88,000 hours were spent on the interstate highway system and another 151,000 hours were logged cleaning up the 9.000 mile primary highways.
