Estes noted that even if sales tax reimbursement falls short of the accountant’s new prediction, “we wouldn’t get into a whole lot of trouble” since the county could dip into its five percent surplus. “I know we’re grasping at straws but we’ve got to cut this 58 cent tax rate,” he told Cox.
Salaries
At the beginning of the meeting, Estes announced his support for the proposed index salary scale for teachers. Questioning the superintendent, Estes confirmed that, as proposed, the total for teachers’ salaries would rise 7.5 percent. Of that amount, 6.3 percent comes from implementation of the index scale with a one percent increase to the first year teacher’s starting pay, necessary to ensure that no teacher will suffer a cut in salary in the new plan’s first year.
