Co-op risks expansion
RICHMOND — Southern States Cooperative Inc., whicl w its sales fall 3 percent last year, is prepared 1 to take the risk of buying the assets of a North Carolina farm cooperative that collapsed.
“This is a big hunk to swallow,” Southern States spokesman Don Tindall said Friday. But the five-state farm supply organization is negotiating to buy the fixed assets of FCX Inc. of Raleigh, N.C.
The agricultural economy is weak, and many farmers have been unable to pay for supplies they have bought. Such defaults contributed to FCX’s collapse. The 50-year-old cooperative filed Sept. 13 for protection under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy law.

FAIRFAX — A Spill of hydrochloric acid and methanol in the parking lot of Lee High School Friday forced the hospitalization of four adults who inhaled the fumes, Fairfax County police said.
The spill, which occurred about noon, did not pose any danger to students inside the building because the wind blew the fumes away from the school.
The injured, all employees of the school, were taken to area hospitals for observation and were later released. They were identified as Delores Lewis, 26, Sam Page, 47, Nida Boguski, 37, and Ernest Anderson, 42. No students were overcome by the fumes.
Nearly three liters of hydrochloric acid and four liters of methanol were spilled by school employees attempting to unload it, police said. The chemicals apparently were for use in science classes.
Hydrochloric acid is non-flammable but highly corrosive. Methanol is a flammable, poisonous liquid alcohol used in antifreeze.
Fairfax fire and rescue workers cleaned up the chemicals shortly after the spill.
