Chester Gap, once referred
to as a sleepy little community sitting atop the mountain peak along the Blue Ridge between Warren and Rappahannock counties, no longer fits that description.
Since the opening of the post office there in 1954 and the country store owned and operated by M.A. Greeley, the village has increased in size and rapidly spread over the mountaintop.
The community Kas^ organized a fire company, and a cinderblock building for equipment, now being stored in someone’s bam, is under construction. To date, all the work on the 32-by62 foot structure has been done by volunteers.
Boxwoods from Washington, Va. “the first Washing of all,” are being taken up and transported to Washington, D.C. to be planted around the new State Department annex. * Each evergreen was at least 20 feet tall, and was estimated to be about 100 years old.
Some 355 county residents received free X-rays in Rappahannock County last week by the mobile unit.
