After weeks of hard work and anticipation, Wakefield’s varsity soccer team has now begun this year’s season. Although Coach Uli Maeyer may still make some cuts or position changes, the team has managed to collect two decisive victories against Tandem School and Tara Reston in its first week of the season.
In the season opener, Wakefield’s varsity team traveled to Tandem School in Charlottesville to capture its first victory in an impressive fashion.
It was only a matter of minutes before the Wakefield players overcame opening day butterflies as David Rowzie, of Amissville, and Ed McGushin, of Haymarket, scored two quick goals en route to a 4-0 halftime lead. After a Tandem goal early in the second half, Wakefield rebounded with tenacious defensive play to gain a 6-1 victory.
In the second game of the season, the Wakefield varsity team collected its first conference victory at Tara Reston. After two opening goals by Larry Tarr, of Warrenton, the Wakefield team cruised to a commanding 5-0 halftime lead. Although the team looked somewhat shaky for part of the second half, they held on to gain their second victory of the season by the score of 7-0.
The junior varsity soccer team, with only one official practice, had its first game of the season of Sept. 20. The home game was played against Randolph Macon Academy, of Front Royal.
In the first quarter of play, RMA scored the first goal and then scored again making the score 2-0 at the end of the first half. After half-time, Wakefield came back with two goals by Jerry Latell, of Huntly, during the third quarter.
During the fourth quarter, Latell made another quick goal with the score standing at 3-2 in favor of Wakefield. RMA scored again shortly after to end the game in a 3-3 tie.
As the match against RMA was the junior varsity’s first game of their 10 game season, the team is looking forward to this new season with a sense of confidence.
The Wakefield varsity hockey team held its first game at the 4-H Center in Front Royal. The varsity, along with the junior varsity team, hosted Foxcroft School, of Middleburg.
In the irst half of play, both teams fought hard tor be the first to score. Foxcroft was the first to take the lead. Lisa Irani, of Front Royal, hit the push back to Molly Dunning, of Boyce, as Wakefield’s offense tried vigorously to even the score.
With Ann Waesche, of Warrenton, defending the goal, the second half began. Britney Lee, of Huntly, tried to block the drive by Foxcroft, but they scored again, winning the game 0-2.
In the junior varsity match, Foxcroft defeated the Wakefield team 03. Strong performances were turned in by veteran players Mary McAllister, of Winchester, and Erica Vanderzon, of Marshall, with newcomer, Leah Millar, of Front Royal, playing an especially strong game and showing great promise as a team member. ^
