The disease was first believed to be limited to Montgomery County, Md., the area hardest hit in the last five years. Then cases began cropping up in New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, New York, Idaho, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. California and Colorado have suspected cases.
More than a dozen states are now reporting Potomac Fever cases and the losses paid by equine insurance companies are becoming alarming, according to Sjandie Cafritz, Potomac Fever chairman for the Morris Animal Foundation, a non-profit organization which has been the primary sponsor of research.
Ms. Cafritz, owner of an Arabian stallion which recovered from Potomac Fever, said that she is extremely concerned for all breeds.
