If you desire to register, you must do so in person by appearing before your county or city registrar or his deputy. All you need do is furnish under oath your full legal name, date and place of birth, length of residency at your present address, Social Security number and any previous place of registration. That’s all there is to it.
A recent change even permits a person to file registration papers in the city or county adjoining the one in which he resides. The registrar of that jurisdiction will forward the papers to the registrar of the individual’s home area where the registration will be duly recorded.
It should be noted that in • Virginia a person does not register by political party. The voter simply registers, and thereafter may vote in any primary or general election. A rare exception to this rule occurs in those cases when, in some jurisdictions, Democratic and Republican primaries are held on the same day. In these cases the voter must choose the primary in which participation is preferred.
Voters who have changed their names or local addresses since the last election must notify their registrars in order for their registrations to remain current. Similarly, for voters who have moved to another city or county within the state, any registrar will, upon request, provide the required transfer by mail registration form. These provisions are particularly important to persons who have recently married or divorced.
