brook is a poor superintendent, you should have been with us when the five members of the school board interviewed the several candidates who wanted the job which Estabrook eventually got. They were incredible!
One of them used English grammar like an imported apple-picker would. None of them were in the slightest way academically inclined and all of them were on the list of state department of education as qualified for appointment as district superintendent!
I became so disturbed by this experience that I wrote the state Superintendent of Education, Dr. S. John Davis, about it. Needless to add, Dr. Davis did not reply that one of his “topics for action” was to clean up the eligibility list.
Mr. Davis has been, and is, one of Virginia’s foremost educators, and he is an accomplished politician. For one thing, Davis is academically inclined and most of our district superintendents are not. They are more interested in basketball or some other such diversion.
If, as you indicated, you are totally disappointed at receiving the terse and cavalier response of seven lines from Bob Estabrook (and you can forget the other six signatures; all are Mr. Estabrook’s subordinates) you have a duty to your readers and to the school children of Rappahannock: Keep your editorial sights trained on those covered (and covering) wagons. Don’t accept this stonewalling from any public official in this county — now, or in the future.
Finally, you do not write of the school board’s role of responsibility in all of this. Never forget that the school board, under Virginia’s Constitution and school laws, has ultimate responsibility in the county for the conduct of its appointed administrators and the operation of the public schools.
