Hearing set
A public hearing is scheduled Oct. 3 to get citiz >n imput on two maps which wc..ld uivide Warrenton into five voting districts for Town Council elections.
The Town Council hasn’t com-, mitted to switching to a ward system, but wants comments from the public on the maps which American Civil Liberities Union submitted Sept. 16 and which were the topic of a council meeting last Thursday.
By voluntarily switching from an at-large system to wards, Warrenton could avoid a potential voting rights lawsuit.
The ACLU has threatened, on behalf of several black residents, to challenge the town’s voting policies in federal court. The citizens claim they aren’t fairly represented on the council.
