“Virtually all the orchard trees in the state, particularly the so-called ‘seedling root stock’ trees, which are in the majority, will be or should be replaced before the century is out, implying a great deal of new planting,” said George Sharp, whose Mountain Green orchard is just outside the Town of Washington. “But we are at a standstill on our farm in the matter of replacing older commercial orchards.”
He noted that his tree loss to dedl" was just 3 percent when he first planted in 1969.
“Three years ago I set out 250 York and Stayman. At least 200 replacements were lost in addition to the original trees and this planting is virtually destroyed — no more than 100 trees of the 450 some planted still live.”
