I hope we are not seeing the start of county tax increases year after year after year. This happened in Montgomery County, Md., and it got to the point that county taxes were decisive in whether you wanted to live there or even could live there. Some of us who saw' this happen get alarmed at the idea of the state mandating this, that, and the other. This does not do much for the viability of local government, where democratic principles supposedly apply more directly than anywhere else.
