and deer have been allowed to proliferate. So far it has showed up in 24 states wdth 90 percent of the cases occuring in just seven: New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Clusters of cases have been reported as far south as Georgia and Texas and as far west as Oregon and California.
Dr. Robert Einarson, health department director for the fivecounty area which includes Rappahannock, “can’t say for sure” if cases of Lyme disease have been confirmed in Virginia.
“There were some that were thought to be Lyme disease,” he said, recalling one such preliminary diagnosis in the Front Royal area in 1984-85. “There was thinking then that perhaps it would get into this part of the state,” he said, adding that the disease has been found primarily in the New England states to date. “No cases have come to my attention in our five-county area, but
