This season suggests to me a popular poem, Pied Beauty, by Garard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), an English Jesuit priest.
The poem is a hymn of praise for the beauty and interest conferred upon us by the variety and randomness in the parti-colored clothes that we associate with the dress of the medieval fool and harlequin, or a masquerade costume. The pattern is often diamond shaped and the colors white, green and red, or black, yellow and white, or any two or three colors.
The camouflage shadows cast by leaves and branches on the ground, the puffs of white clouds against a blue sky, the black and brown blotches on the hides of cattle, draw the poet’s eyes, as do the pink circles against the iridescent green scales on the sides of trout. Hopkins finds interest in the landscape where fallow strips lie next to ploughed and green ones, and stone walls outline sheep folds.
