In other poems, Hopkins celebrates the wilderness aspects of nature and criticizes what human beings do to upset or destroy it. He lived as the industrial revolution caused great changes in all aspects of society and he was concerned for that.
Like Emily Dickinson (18301880), Hopkins has had his principal poetic impact in this century rather than in the one in which he lived. Like Dickinson’s, his poems weren’t published in his lifetime and his work is experimental and controversial. Often his poems must be worked on before they can be understood. He made up words, used old fashioned ones, and he especially concentrated his thoughts. Some of his poems have the appeal of a cross word puzzle.
