The ticks that carry Lyme’s disease grow through several stages, from larvae to nymphs to adults, needing one blood meal at each stage. The larvae tend to feed on white-footed mice, the nymphs on mice, birds or humans and the adult ticks on white-tailed deer or other warm-blooded animals, including humans. The adult females are about half the size of the ticks commonly found on dogs and have a fringe of scarlet around their hind parts. The adult males are all black and smaller. The immature ticks, the nymphs and larvae, are not much larger than the period at the end of this sentence. They are the primary transmitters of the disease, according to the Smithsonian article.
