there appears to be a correlation between overpopulation of deer and proliferation of the tiny deer ticks that carry the Lyme disease spirochete. Just as the size of deer herds has been on the upswing, so has the incidence of the disease that deer ticks carry.
The federal government’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta lists 1,498 confirmed cases in 1984 compared to only 599 in 1983 and 226 in 1980. According to CDC researchers, these represent just a fraction of the real total, since doctors in most states are not required to report the cases they encounter.
The Smithsonian article refers to Lyme disease as a “suburban disease” since it usually occurs where houses are near woods or other areas where hunting is prohibited
