In promulgating the sixth guideline, requiring a certificate of appropriateness for work on the interiors of public buildings, the ARB noted that the proposal complies with the town’s historic district ordinance which specifies: “The Architectural Review Board shall not consider interior designs, interior arrangement or building features not subject to public view.”
In a telephone interview on Monday, Mrs. Willis noted that the guidelines are designed to protect — and even increase —property values in the town, not only for the property owner planning an addition or renovation, but those of neighbors as well. She maintained that the town and the county are both at a crucial point with the population in adjoining Fauquier County burgeoning.
“We have to decide if we want to preserve our character and heritage or become a bedroom community,” she said.
The ARB members—Jim Thomasson, Carol Miller and Mrs. Willis — “seek the support of the townspeople,” she continued. ‘We have an open ear for suggestions,” Mrs. Willis said, adding that the ARB members plan to attend ARB meetings in other communities to learn more.
