A good move
Any move to increase bureaucracy provokes skepticism and concern.
But the Board of Supervisors hiring of a zoning administrator is a good move — one that should simplify, rather than complicate, local bureaucracy. In his new job, John W. McCarthy III should improve communications among county agencies and should help citizens in their dealings with local government. His presence will free the supervisors and Planning Commission of some routine matters so they can concentrate on policy and major decisions.
And, it sounds as if Mr. McCarthy understands the type of government service Rappahannock citizens want and need — friendly, efficient and free of any unnecessary red tape.
The supervisors have done a good job in filling the $22,000-a-year post. The dividends soon should be obvious.
And, Mr. McCarthy deserves a hearty welcome and best wishes as he tackles his important duties.
