If up to 4,000 Virginia farmers are forced out in -he near future, we can expect as many as 1,000 local businesses to fail. State banking experts note that the hometown banks in Virginia are carrying a disproportionate share of the farm debt.
Instead of allowing the agricultural sector in the state — which now basically produces and sells a raw material — to wither, we could aid economic development in rural areas by encouraging the processing of farm products —canning and freezing, for example — to increase the value of this segment of our economy.
