Mr. Tomko, who owns a Japanese Steak House in Northern Virginia, said that he also does a lot of business-related entertaining at his home, a practice he would have to discontinue if a dump goes on the Stover tract.
“Half or better (of the Stover tract’s 100 acres) is not suited for a landfill. It’s swampy, low and marshy,” Bobby Carter contended. Streams border three sides of the property and the large stream running along the bottom of the hill where the test sites were drilled “has never failed, never been dry” since the 1940s, he said.
Mr. Carter said he has no faith in the liners which are designed to contain run-off from a landfill. The liner will puncture, the risk increased significantly by the disposal of 55-gallon drums that once held “insecticides and pesticides from orchards,” Mr. Carter said.
He criticized the proposal for a landfill in “one of the heaviest populated areas” of Rappahannock. “There are more suitable places for it,” Mr. Carter concluded.
