SAFE seeks
volunteers
April is National Volunteer Month.
Services to Abused Families, a United Way organization dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence, is looking for volunteers. In 1986, SAFE received 1,468 requests for counseling and advocacy from 603 families in the five county area of PD-9. Out of 167 requests for shelter, 122 women and children were provided shelter and 45 referrals were made to other shelters or agencies.
There are several ways a volunteer can serve families in crisis: The Hotline Volunteer answers crisis calls from victims of domestic violence. The calls can be taken at home. Volunteers are trained in crisis counseling, community resources and making referrals. Back-up staff is always provided.
The Client Advocate assists SAFE clients in their interaction with local agencies, grocery shopping, and their search for housing.
The Court Advocate is trained to educate clients about their legal options and the process of legal action. The Advocate may accompany the women to court to act as a support person dining a very difficult time.
The Children’s Advocate works with the children in structured play groups and individual activities under the supervision of the Services Coordinator. .
