Mr. Massie told the crowd. Advertisements soliciting possible landfill locations were placed in The Rappahannock News and papers in adjoining counties, and local realtors were contacted. In addition, newspapers carried periodic reports on the committee’s progress. “Everybody who reads The Rappahannock News knows we were looking for a site,” Mr. Massie said.
The committee came up with 13 possibilities in addition to the Lee Farm which had already been proposed by the landowners as a private landfill. Six were studied but not formally evaluated after initial inspection by committee members found obvious drawbacks, ranging from steep slopes and rocky soils to poor road access, according to Mr. Massie. Of the eight which were evaluated, the Stover tract near Amissville was given the highest rating and recommended for further testing.
