Toxic waste could be deposited in the landfill along with dangerous pesticides, insecticides and household cleaners, said Hugh Green. Mixed together, the chemicals could pose a far greater threat, he said. “We will be producing something that man doesn’t yet know how to deal with.”
“It seems the Stover tract meets maybe one” of the evaluation criteria on which the site selection committee based its ratings, said Charles Dishner. “Don't waste your time and efforts here. Go elsewhere, please.”
A landfill on the Stover tract will make his retirement plans impossible, said Robert Duxbury. “I don’t want to live next to a dump.”
Litter, odor and fires
Professional fireman Jim Woodard reported that “papers blow for miles” from the Fairfax landfill next to the fire training academy. At the Lorton landfill, compactors regularly turn up human body parts and fire fighters are called on to quell one or two fires there every day, he said. Smell from the dump is a problem, regardless of how well and how often the trash is covered with dirt, according to Mr. Woodard.
Addressing himself to Supervisors Nelson Lane, Charles Estes and Hubert Gilkey, the three board members elected in 1983, Mr. Woodard asked, “What have you been doing all this time? You knew years ago that there were problems with the Woodville site (the county’s existing privately owned and operated landfill which will close this July 1).
“. . . You jumped into this (the Stover tract) because of the shortness of time. Sit back and take a better look.” He reported seven beaver dams, deer and turkey between the proposed dump site and the Rappahannock River. “There’s a lot to look at. Other than human beings, we have our environment . . . Please take your time and really dig into this.”
