Tired, no doubt, after the four preceding races he rode, Mr. Winants was unable to stop his mount who took him, with one detour into the woods, around the course one more time.
Mr. Winants got a break until the eighth race, a turf event of IV2 miles, when he rode Amaflyer, again to an exciting finish. Amaflyer came from far back in the 13-horse pack to rally in the final lengths with Lyndian who finished a close second but was later disqualified.
This was an odd race which took a nasty twist when Pay The Cashier fell and left Babs Timmerman lying on the course with a broken ankle. Flagmen, who moved in to clear the course around the fallen rider, were overwhelmed by the large field and recriminations were rained upon all the riders, with the exception of Don Yovanovich, for failing to steer wide of the accident.
Another surprise graced the day — sure bet Essayer failed to win the open hurdle race, losing his undefeated status on this year’s point-topoint circuit.
“They hooked me early,” Essay eFs regular jockey Speedy Smithwick said. “I couldn’t get the lead and relax.”
Essayer took the lead in the first half-mile, though his heels were being dogged by Ralemijo and Tic-Tac, who soon stole the leadership position. His work done, Ralemijo slipped back, but Tic-Tac ran on strong and dominated the rest of the race, capturing the victory with Don Yovanovich.
“He’s sanctioned next,” Mr. Yovanovich said of his pupil Tic-Tac, owned by R. M. Waterman.
Mr. Smithwick was not without victory, though. He captured the novice timber race with Kitty Smith’s Stag, who made a strong showing in the final half-mile, passing Tingles Image and Amadeus.
The final race of the day went to Albert Poe and his horse Fleeting Roy. The duo moved to the lead early in the race and showed the way home.
