• discussed possible candidates for the town’s Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. Mayor Morehouse asked that a list of candidates be finalized by May so that it can be submitted to Judge Shore Robertson, who will make the appointments. Among the residents suggested as possible members of the two boards were Joyce Kramer, Ray Gooch and Pat Giles.
• tabled, because of her absence, a suggestion from Council member Evelyn Willis that a citizen’s committee explore alternatives to raise revenue by broadening the town’s tax base.
• discussed a request for a public telephone somewhere in town. Mr. Reynolds told Council that Centel no longer installs pay telephones because of need, but rather based on expected revenue. He added that the person who requests the installation is responsible for damages, as well as making up any shortfall in projected revenue from the phone. Council took no action on the request.
• was told that forms for reporting the town’s 2 1/2 percent meals and transient lodging tax have been printed, and will be distributed to the restaurants and B and Bs shortly.
• heard that requests for voluntary reports of revenue for the past several years will be mailed soon, with a covering letter of explanation, to all the town’s businesses.
