with open arms by Antilles School. They now hope to finish their working careers there, where grades Kindergarten through 12 are taught.
For some time, I have planned to contribute an article to the Rappahannock News on the theme of Dr. Hammons' article but, when I saw his, / knew that I could never express my thoughts as well as he has. With his kind permission, I offer it to the people of Rappahannock, and especially to the parents of school children, as valuable food for thought.
While a member of Rappahannock’s School Board, I used to quote Sir Francis Bacon’s definition of the word “education" to my colleagues and to applicants for teaching jobs: “Education is the inculcation of knowledge and virtue. ”
1 am pleased to note that both Antilles School and Rappahannock’s own Wakefield School subscribe to Bacon’s definition. There is nothing to prevent Rappahannock's public schools from doing the same; the only thing required is to cease looking for excuses not to do it.
