As a historian, I find those reasons are all well and good, although incomplete. As a high school teacher, I know they are completely wrong, by virtue of being extraneous.
As a teacher, I know that history flows over a child like water over a rock. Foreign wars don’t make kids dishonest, and big cities don’t make them whiners. Children are bad for the same reasons that adults are bad: they have no character.
And that meahs that they haven’t been taught any, and that means that the schools have not been doing their job.
That is not to say that schools alone have failed. So have churches and families.
But schools, in terms of time alone, are the primary institution in an American child’s life. School has him seven hours of every day, and
