The Sodbuster Provisions: The sodbuster provision of the 1985 farm oill may affect Rappahannock County farmers this year. If you plant (or planted) a crop on land that was not cropped at least once from 1981 to 1985, you may not be eligible for farm program payments, FmHA loans or Crop Insurance in 1987 unless: 1) The Soil Conservation Service determines the field is not highly erodible; 2) OR you follow a conservation plan approved by the Soil Conservation District Board to protect the field from erosion. Beginning in 1990 an approved conservation plan will be required on all highly erodible cropland.
Foreign Investors: Federal law requires owners of U.S. Agricultural Land to report their holdings to USDA/ASCS within 90 days of the transfer of property. Failure to report could result in a fine of up to 25 percent of the land’s fair market value.
