In its role as watchdog over Virginia’s landfills, the Department of Waste Management’s “number one priority is protecting the public health, safety and welfare and the environment,” said Harry Gregori, director of the department’s Office of Policy Planning. “And that comes down to protecting the groundwater.”
He assured the crowd at last week’s landfill hearing that his department “looks very, very hard at the technical requirements” for achieving that protection before granting a permit for a solid waste disposal facility.
