It was the quiet before the storm at Tuesday’s meeting, the last before the School Board sees not if, but how much, the supervisors will trim from the proposed 1987-88 budget.
The board members breezed through an hour and a half s business before retiring to executive session to determine who will be offered a contract for next year.
And the personnel business was conducted just as quickly, as the board voted unanimously to accept the superintendent’s recommendation to tender contracts for 1987-88 to all present instructional, administrative and classified staff members.
However, several have already indicated that they will not return. At the top of the list are assistant superintendent Tom Campbell, leaving July 1 to take the newly created position of director of research and instructional services with the Orange County school system, and veterans Dorothy Butler and Lucia Kilby who will be retiring.
During the weekly budget building sessions in March, the board had considered adoption of an administrative salary scale but agreed to delay adoption until next year, asking the administration to work on a proposal modeled after Amherst County’s compensation system.
On Tuesday, assistant superintendent Tom Campbell presented a first draft.
“The indices preserve the salary relationships we have now. The order is the same ... from lowest paying to the highest paying among the administrative staff,” the superintendent noted.
The scale uses the 25th step on the proposed 1987-88 teacher pay scale - $26,174 - as a base. Level one (elementary assistant principal) is 1.05 percent of that base; level two (special services coordinator) 1.07 percent; level three (high school assistant principal) 1.09 percent; level four (elementary school principal) 1.18 percent; level five (high school principal) 4.35 percent; level six (assistant superintendent) 1.57 percent. In addition, an experience increment of .02 per year is added at each level up to a maximum of eight years. For example, an assistant superintendent with eight years experience would make 1.71 percent of i*.'' m ——•ww——-a g
