Following the naming of the Fodderstack Classic to Running Times magazine’s list of the top 75 road races in the country, entries are running well ahead of last year, according to the race’s organizers.
As of Tuesday there are about 150 runners pre-registered, and if Saturday is a nice day the organizers expect as many as 200 more may show up at the start in Flint Hill.
Although Running Times called the race a pastoral trek between two historic hamlets, veteran runners know that the course is among the most challenging any have run. From Flint Hill to the finish in Washington, the hilly course offers little relief. It boasts the wellknown Tom Lee’s Hill at the four-mile point as well as two lesser-known but still formidable climbs at the entrance to the Town of Washington, as the exhausted runners reach the sixmile mark and are almost within sight of the finish.
Entries have come from as far as New York, Texas, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, as well as D. C. and West Virginia.
Among the 100 pre-registered men are last year’s winner, Tim Kearney of Culpeper. Bobby Beathard and Robert Gurtler are the pre-race leaders in the 50-59 age group. Admiral John Marocchi, a local favorite, is a pre-race pick in the men’s over 60 bracket
