Asked which of the five counties would accept a resource recovery facility, Col. Bingham insisted that the money to be made through a regeneration system would offset any opposition. The plant would not only produce energy, he pointed out. “On the back, I’m going to propose that they put small electric smelters” which would melt down scrap metal and turn it into ingots, Col. Bingham explained. “If we can’t sell them to our own foundries, I know other countries that will buy them. They’ll come over here and pick them up.”
“This board has never been against a regional facility, but we can’t get anybody in the region to go along with the idea,” said Chairman Gilkey.
“And if they did, they’d want to put it in the least populated area, and we’d be taking EVERYBODY’S trash,” added Supervisor Nelson Lane.
Col. Bingham stressed he was not proposing “something that size go in this county,” suggesting that “new blood” from jurisdictions with intense growth and development be asked to join in the regional trash disposal effort - and provide a site for the regeneration facility.
