music. She’s an entertainer who entertains with song AND story, infusing her concerts with down-to-earth anecdotes, poetry recitations, bits of history and tales so funny that the teller giggles along with her audience.
She engages her listeners, making them feel that this is a performance especially for them. And it is, because no two of Claudia Schmidt’s concerts are ever alike. “When I sing in front of audiences, I think, *We are a community’, ” she explained. “And every community is different.”
Ten years of performing across the United States and through western Europe in clubs, colleges, concert halls and folk festivals have taught her to connect with an audience rather than working through a set song list and rehearsed line of patter. “The themes will really vary from night to night,” she said. “One night, there will be incredible laughter and the very next night we’ll get into all kinds of heavy stuff. What happens in a performance is that I work with the audience from moment to moment.”
