And more important than anything else, foraging brings a renewed appreciation of the beauty, fragility and wonder of our natural environment. It can make us all born-again conservationists.
While I scanned the forest floor for the plants Lyt Wood, had described, I saw scores of others which ordinarily would have passed, unnoticed under foot. Peeking through last fall’s dead brown leaves, there were the first wildflowers of the new ^season: blood root, whose tulip-like white blossoms open to a golden center, three-lobed hepatica in blue and white, dainty Spring Beauty and flashy Dutchman’s Britches. Poking their way up to daylight, the leaves of wild orchids promised even showier blooms in the months to come.
