For inoat Americans, a house is the single biggest material investment they will make in a lifetime. (Material is added as a qualifier because for American parents, the cost of raising a child to adulthood still exceeds the cost of the average residence.)
It is that substantial investment that they see threatened by a proposal to establish a landfill, dog pound, tannery or migrant worker camp next door. They view these and other uses as undesirable and see them as having an adverse impact on the value of their investment.
That fear was voiced repeatedly by Amissville residents who live in the vicinity of the 100-acre Stover tract currently under consideration as the site of a county-owned and operated sanitary landfill.
