Historical Society meeting

The Rappahannock Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Friday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Society’s building on Gay St. in Washington. Officers will be elected for the coming year and an inter* eating program will be presented. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served.

Rappahannock County History

Learn what’s been going on in the area from one who really knows. Elisabeth Johnson, co-author with her late husband C. E. “Ned” Johnson, of Facta, Fiction & Foolishness, a history of this county, will conduct a course on our county’s history in six sessions beginning May 6 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Child Care and Learning Center. ‘Nothing in Common9

The movie Nothing In Common will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Friday, May 1, and Sunday, May 3, at 7:80 p.m. The movie, starring Tom Hanks, Jackie Gleason, Eva Marie Saint and Hector Elizondo, is an unusual family drama/comedy which centers on the conflicts between Tom Hanks as a womanizing ad man and his father (Gleason), an aging Willy Loman-type whose wife of 84 years has left him. Hanks sees himself in his failed father and knows he has choices to make. Great acting from Hanks and Elizondo. The movie is rated PG. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

Bloodmobile to be in Washington

The Red Cross bloodmobile will be at the Washington fire hall on Monday, May 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. All types of blood are needed. Area residents are urged to participate. The bloodmobile is sponsored by the Rappahannock Extension Homemakers Council.

Choral Society spring concert

The Culpeper-Piedmont Choral Society’s annual spring concert will be held May 8 at 8 p.m. at the Culpeper County High School. Music Director Lois Shanks has chosen to trace the history of popular music from Civil War times through the 1960s. Performers include the 45voice chorus (now in its 20th year), soloists, a barbershop quartet, dancer, narrator and instrumentalists.

Any individuals wishing to become patrons, or businesses who would like to place an ad in the concert program, are asked to contact the C.P.C.S. Fund Raising Chairman, Mrs. Handorf, at 825-6282 in Culpeper.

Circus at Apple Festival

The Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus will be appearing at Hie Apple Blossom Mall in Winchester May 1-3. The circus, in its 101st year, is the oldest and largest traditional traveling three-ring circus in America.

Showtimes are as follows: Friday, 2, 5 and 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 5 and 8:30 p.m.,; and Sunday, 1 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7, $4 for children and senior citizens. The circus is being sponsored by the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.

Chester Gap Honorary Fire Chief

Girls between the ages of 12 and 18 who wish to compete for the title of Chester Gap Honorary Fire Chief to represent the Chester Gap VFD in upcoming parades should contact Karen Williams at 635-4678.

The carnival dates for this year are July 22 through 25. A grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded on July 25.

Pig roast at Castleton

An all-you-can eat pig roast dinner with all the trimmings will be served at the Castleton fire hall on Sunday, May 17 from 2-4 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children. ‘Dimensions9 and photography

A show of sculpture, pottery and collage entitled “Dimensions” will open at Middle Street Gallery on Saturday, May 2, from 5 to 10 p.m. A new exhibition of photographs by Edik Gladkov of the Soviet Union will also be displayed. These are pictures produced underground in Russia which have never been seen before in the United States. The two shows will run through May. Gallery hours are 11-6 Friday through Sunday and by appointment. Call 675-8440 for information.
