The themes she strikes are as appropriate here in the Blue Ridge foothills as in the prairies and plains of her home. In fact, her “Midwestern Heart” could be rewritten as “Blue Ridge Heart”: “Midwestern heart/ big ornery thing/ beating away in the chest/ Loves too hard/ expects too much... moralistic, masochistic/ honest/ It throbs to simple fun .. .It resonates to rolling hills/ lush landscapes/ everything. ”
Ms. Schmidt is on the road nine months of the year, but manages to stop long enough for recording dates and sessions with film crews. She has released four albums, one awarded an honorable mention as album of the year by Stereo Review. She recently starred in a half-hour television special, I Sing Because I Can’t Fly: A Portrait of Claudia Schmidt, and is currently working on the music for a film, Gap-Toothed Women, featuring Chaucer’s Wife of Bath, Lauren Hutton, Sandra Day O’Connor, Cleopatra, Saskia (Rembrandt’s wife and favorite model) and 30 other women possessing les dents du bonheur (the teeth of happiness). “Pretty fun!” Ms. Schmidt enthused.
